Wayne Pfeffer

Wayne Pfeffer, MHSA, FACHE
Medical Center Director

 

Wayne L. Pfeffer was appointed Medical Center Director of the VA Medical Center in Louisville, Kentucky in July 2005.  As Director, he is responsible for the day-to-day operations of Louisville’s Zorn Avenue facility and its five community-based outpatient clinics in Louisville and Southern Indiana.  His key responsibilities include providing executive leadership, budgetary and operations oversight for both clinical and administrative services as well as development and implementation of strategic program goals and actions for the medical center including the accreditation process (JCAHO) and the overall medical center’s clinical performance.

Mr. Pfeffer is a member of the Mid South Healthcare Network (VISN 9) Executive Leadership Council and actively collaborates with other VA Medical Center Directors in Kentucky, West Virginia and Tennessee in the formulation of budget, policy, and strategic business planning at the Network level.

Having served in various capacities at 10 distinct medical centers, Mr. Pfeffer brings an enormous depth of knowledge and experience in Department of Veterans Affairs’ operations.  Prior to assuming his current role, Mr. Pfeffer served as Associate Director of the two-division Lexington, KY VA Medical Center, and as Acting Director of that facility.  Mr. Pfeffer has also served as Associate Director of the Boise, Idaho VA Medical Center.

Mr. Pfeffer began his VA career at the Bronx New York VA Medical Center. Wayne has progressed from chief of fiscal service, to his present position. Mr. Pfeffer holds a master’s degree in Health Services Administration (MHSA) and is a Fellow with the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE). Additionally, he is a certified mediator for workplace disputes, a mentor and preceptor to the national Executive Career Field program, and served as coach at the national Health Care Leadership Institute (HCLI).  Mr. Pfeffer is a 1991 graduate of Leadership VA. 

Mr. Pfeffer has played a leadership role and/or participated in several significant Network and national VA endeavors throughout his career.  For example, he chaired the VA-wide Cost Restructuring Task Force, which provided major improvement to VA cost accounting and accountability.  He also chaired the VISN 9 Medical Care Cost Recovery (MCCR) consolidation task force, which produced the first consolidated MCCR unit in the country.  Mr. Pfeffer served as the network liaison to VA central office’s competitive sourcing initiative as well as for the national laundry pilot program; he is currently a member of the national steering committee on the Management/Analysis/Business Process Reengineering Pilot.  He currently chair's the Network Workforce Development Council and previously chaired the Network Communications Council.  Mr. Pfeffer participates on numerous other VISN committees and task forces.  He has been appointed to serve as chief negotiator for the creation of various network product lines, including Business Office, Finance Office, Acquisition & Material Management, Decision Support System (DSS), and Prosthetics.  He is a strong supporter of executive and employee development, serving as mentor to four mid-level employees in the VISN 9 Leadership Institute, a Graduate Healthcare Administration Training Program (GHATP) preceptor, a coach in the Health Care Leadership Institute, and a mentor to several Executive Career Field candidates. Mr. Pfeffer served four terms as President of the Lexington Federal Executive Association, and as a member of various Hospital Associations, including serving as a Board member Kentucky Consortium for Health care professions.  Mr. Pfeffer also serves as a national rater and ranker for the best qualified list for director and associate director positions.

Other key past leadership activities include: participation as a healthcare expert on the State of Idaho Pre-litigation Screening Panel, planning board member and day chair for the 1998 Leadership VA (LVA) National Forum, member of the Chamber of Commerce Health Care Planning Board, United Way of Lexington, Kentucky and Idaho’s Hospital Associations, and planning Board Member of the 1995 National Associate Director Forum.

Mr. Pfeffer has received numerous local, network and National Awards, including a 2004 Director’s Commendation.
