Volunteers provide a unique brand of support for the Louisville VA Medical Center by assisting staff with a variety of activities that support the care and treatment of veterans. Volunteers may provide clerical support, direct or indirect patient care, mechanical support, transportation support or grounds maintenance support. Assignments are available throughout the medical center and interested individuals may contact Voluntary Service to discuss their personal interests.
We've listed some of the ways you can volunteer below. However, if you have special skills to offer, please call us so we can discuss how you can best use your talents to help our patients.
- Medical Records / File Room
- Volunteers are needed to assist with retrieving files and with photocopying information. Positions are available between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
- Pharmacy Support
- Volunteers are needed to support timely delivery of pharmacy medications and supplies to veterans. Positions are available between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
- Emergency Room Escorts
- Escorts are needed in the emergency room from 6:00 p.m. until midnight daily to transport patients, lab specimen, and other healthcare materials to the appropriate sites throughout the medical center.
- Patient Transportation Services
- Drivers and Transportation Coordinators are needed for the Volunteer Transportation Program, a special service staffed by volunteers who are dedicated to assuring that veterans have the transportation they need to come to the medical center and to community-based outpatient clinics.
- Parking Lot Shuttle Drivers
- Shuttle drivers are needed to transport patients from the VA grounds parking lots to the main building. Positions are available between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
- Clerical Support Activities
- Assignments of varying degrees of complexity are available in many areas of the medical center. Check with the Voluntary Service Office to determine the assignment that best suits your interests and skills. A variety of positions are available between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
- Escort Service
- Volunteers are needed on Thursday and Fridays between Noon and 4:30 p.m. to transport patients, wheelchairs, lab specimens, documents, etc., from one area of the medical center to another. Positions are available between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
- Information Desk
- Volunteers are needed to assist patients and visitors with information and directions at the west entrance and the clinic entrance between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
- MOVE!
- Volunteers for this program would place follow-up calls to patients who are enrolled in MOVE!
- My HealthEVet
- If you are comfortable with computers and accessing the internet, this may be the position for you. Volunteers are needed to instruct veterans on access and use of this beneficial website.
