On July 8th, the Robley Rex VA Medical Center (VAMC) proudly unveiled its newly renovated Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU).  This $2,543,381 renovation project pairs state-of-the-art medical equipment with the latest advancements in technology to create a soothing "patient-centered" environment conducive to healing.

Renovations, which began in December 2009, features a new layout with two nurses stations designed to greatly reduce travel distance between patients and staff; installation of computer work stations in each room to provide immediate access to electronic medical records;  patient lifts to enhance patient comfort and safety; heat lamps to provide focused warmth for improved healing; Skytron exam lights which can be remotely rotated and focused on a specific treatment area; and medical services booms which can be moved provide rapid and easy access to medical gases, power and the nurse call system.  This project also features new infection control measures such as:  ante-rooms with pass-thru cabinets to allow transfer of items to and from the room without the need for additional staff to enter the room.

Understanding the direct impact an environment has on healing; a "patient-centered" design concept was utilized throughout the entire renovation process.  Features include warm interior finishes to create a welcoming environment; use of shapes, colors and curved forms to soften the look; wood grain flooring and cabinetry; and soft lighting to enhance the overall environment.   Our nation's Veterans deserve only the highest level of quality care and services.  Our new SICU is a true demonstration of putting Veterans first.
