Be Physically Active

Robley Rex VAMC Gym:

  • Veterans can be referred to use the Robley Rex VAMC Gym by their providers.
  • The gym is staffed by our exercise physiologist who is familiar with accommodations and modifications related to COPD, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, orthopedic limitations, chronic pain, and mental health diagnoses.
  • He will work with each veteran to provide an exercise prescription. He can also support monitoring, by utilizing insulin or blood pressure checks while exercising.

Adaptive Sports Program:

Disabled Veterans of all ages and abilities report better health, new friendships and a better quality of life when participating in adaptive sports. Tai Chi:

  • Currently offered at Dupont CBOC in 6 week series, contact for HPDP department for schedule.
  • Tai Chi originated in China as a martial art and is used by many to improve overall health and wellness. Described by some as moving mediation, it consists of slow, gentle movements paired with mental awareness and breathing. The class will explore the fundamental concepts of Tai Chi while teaching breathing practices and the basic movements of Tai Chi and QiGong.
  • The class is appropriate for all fitness levels. Individuals are encouraged to discuss any concerns with participation with their physician. While it is recommended to participate in the entire series, individuals are always welcome to join the group at any time. For your comfort it is recommended that you wear loose clothing and comfortable shoes.

  • Project Healing Waters:
    • The Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing program provides basic fly fishing, fly casting, fly tying and rod building classes, along with clinics participants ranging from beginners who have never fished before, to those with prior fly fishing and tying experience who are adapting their skills to their new abilities. All fly fishing and tying equipment is provided to the participants at no cost.

Walking for Wellness:

  • 8 week group, Thursdays 11AM – 12PM, Scottsburg CBOC
